The short version: a good NFC business card opens a profile you can update any time, works on every modern phone without an app, puts a Save contact button front and centre, and lets the other person send their details back. For a team, add central control of the brand and the cards, and a clear answer on where contact data is kept.

Below are the questions worth asking, with what Nexus does for each so you have a reference point.

Does it need an app?

It shouldn’t. Every iPhone from the iPhone XS onwards reads NFC in the background, and most Android phones do too. A tap should open a web page straight away. If the person you meet has to download something first, most won’t.

What happens when your details change?

A smart card should open a live profile, not store your details on the chip. Then a new job title, number or link is a two-minute edit, and every card you’ve already handed out shows the change. Check that editing is included in the price, not only the first set-up.

Can people save you in one tap?

The reason to hand someone a card is so they can contact you later. Look for a prominent Save contact button that adds you to their address book, and a way for them to send their details back, so you aren’t relying on them to follow up.

What does it cost, in total?

Compare the card price and any subscription together. Nexus cards are a one-off £19.99 (PVC), £25.99 (wood) or £46.99 (metal), including VAT, and the profile is free for good. Plans are optional and add templates, more profiles, longer analytics and team tools.

Where is the data kept, and who sees it?

Under UK GDPR, the details people share with you are personal data. Ask whether the profile sets tracking cookies, whether visitor IP addresses are stored, how contact data is encrypted and whether companies can sign a data processing agreement. Our UK GDPR guide explains each point.

Will it work for a team?

If you are buying for more than a handful of people, check you can lock the brand, reassign cards when people change roles, and keep contacts when someone leaves. The UK teams guide walks through a rollout.
