NFC business cards in Dubai and the UAE: a buyer's guide

The UAE runs on introductions, follow-ups and WhatsApp. Here is what an NFC card should do for you there, and the questions worth asking before you order one for yourself or your whole company.

If you work in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the Emirates, the short answer is this: an NFC business card is worth it when it opens a profile in both Arabic and English, puts a WhatsApp button one tap away, works on every phone without an app, and lets you change your details without reprinting. If you are buying for a company, add two more tests: can you control the brand and the cards centrally, and do you know where your contacts' data is stored?

The rest of this guide explains why those points matter in the UAE in particular, and how to compare the cards you will find on offer.

Why NFC cards suit the way the UAE does business

Few places pack as much face-to-face networking into a year. The calendar is built around large trade events: GITEX for technology, Cityscape for property, Arab Health for healthcare, The Big 5 for construction, and many more in between. At each of them, people meet dozens of new contacts a day, often across several languages, and most of those conversations last a few minutes.

Paper cards struggle in that setting. You run out by the second afternoon. The ones you collect end up in a jacket pocket, and by the time you are back at your desk you cannot remember which face goes with which name. Your own card is often out of date too, because people in the UAE change roles, companies and even mobile numbers more often than a print run allows.

An NFC card solves the practical part. You hold it near someone's phone, your profile opens in their browser, and they save your contact in one tap. You never run out, and when your details change you update them once in the dashboard. Every card you have ever handed over shows the new version, because the card points to a permanent link rather than to printed text. If you want the technical side, how NFC business cards work covers it.

One tap on the other person's phone opens your live profile in the browser. No app on either side.

Arabic and English, laid out properly

In the UAE you will hand your card to Emirati government officials, Saudi buyers, Indian suppliers and European investors in the same week. A profile that only speaks English leaves part of that audience out. A profile with Arabic text forced into a left-to-right layout looks careless, which is worse.

What you want is a genuine right-to-left layout for Arabic, where the text, the order of the buttons and the direction of icons all flip, and labels such as Save contact appear in Arabic too. Better still is an automatic option that shows each visitor Arabic or English to match the language of their own phone, so you do not have to choose.

WhatsApp first, phone second

For many people in the Gulf, WhatsApp is the default way to follow up after a meeting. A good profile treats it as a first-class button, not a link buried at the bottom. One tap should open a chat with you straight away on the visitor's phone, with your number already filled in.

Alongside it, the essentials are a call button, an email button, your company website and a Save contact button that downloads your details as a contact card (vCard), so you appear in their address book with your photo, title and company. If you also want people to send their details back to you, look for an exchange feature that lets a visitor share their name and number with you from the same page.

The best follow-up in the UAE is the one that starts before you have walked away from the stand.

What to look for when comparing cards

Most NFC cards use similar chips, so the real differences are in the profile, the dashboard and the company behind them. These are the questions worth asking.

QuestionWhy it matters in the UAEWhat good looks like
Does it work without an app?Your contacts will not install anything at a busy stand.Opens in the browser on iPhone and Android, with a QR code for older phones.
Is Arabic properly supported?Half your audience may prefer it.Full right-to-left layout, Arabic labels, automatic language option.
Is there a WhatsApp button? It is how most follow-ups start.A prominent button that opens a chat in one tap.
Can I change details later?Roles and numbers change often.Edit any time; every card keeps working on a permanent link.
Can a company manage it?Large firms need one brand and control over cards.Locked templates, departments, approvals and a card pool.
Where is data stored?Clients and legal teams will ask.A clear answer, encryption at rest and export or deletion on request.

Materials and finishes

First impressions count in the UAE, and the card itself is part of that. PVC cards are printed in full colour edge to edge, so they suit companies with strong brand artwork and large teams. Wood cards (bamboo, walnut, cherry or maple) are laser-engraved and feel warm and natural. Metal cards in black, silver, gold or rose gold are brushed and laser-engraved, and weigh more than three times as much as PVC, which is why they are popular with senior people and client-facing roles. Our comparison of metal, wood and PVC business cards goes into detail.

Team management

If you are buying for more than a handful of people, the dashboard matters more than the card. You should be able to set one company template in Arabic and English, lock the logo and colours, organise people by department, and decide what each person can edit. When someone joins or leaves, their card should go back into a company pool and be reassigned, rather than walking out of the door with them. Contacts they collected should stay with the company.

Data privacy and where data is hosted

A business card platform holds personal data: your team's details, and the names, numbers and emails of everyone they meet. Ask where that data is hosted, how it is protected and whether you can export or delete it. Be wary of vague answers or of certifications you cannot verify.

For reference, Nexus hosts its application, database and file storage in the EU, encrypts data in transit with TLS and HSTS, and encrypts contact data and secrets at rest with AES-256-GCM field-level encryption. Passwords are hashed, two-factor sign-in is available, and analytics use no tracking cookies and store no IP addresses. The security page has the full picture, so you can share it with your IT or legal team.

Buying for a company in the UAE

Company rollouts tend to follow the same path. It is worth planning it before you order, especially if you have an event like GITEX or Cityscape coming up and want everyone ready for it.

  1. 1

    Agree the brand template

Pick a template, add your logo, colours and company details in both languages, and lock what employees should not change.

  2. 2

    Decide who edits what

Some companies control everything centrally. Others let staff update their photo and phone number, with approval for job titles.

  3. 3

    Import your team

Upload your roster from a spreadsheet, then group people into departments with their managers.

  4. 4

    Order cards into a pool

Choose materials for each group, for example metal for leadership and PVC for the wider team, and assign each card to a person.

  5. 5

    Connect your CRM

Send new contacts to HubSpot, Zapier, Make or a webhook so leads from events land where your sales team already works.

There is a longer version of this in our playbook on rolling out digital business cards across a company.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ordering before the profile is ready. The card is only as good as the page it opens. Finish the profile first, then order.
  • English only. If your clients include Arabic speakers, a bilingual profile is a small effort that is noticed.
  • Hiding WhatsApp. Put it at the top. It is the button most people in the region will press.
  • Personal accounts for company cards. If each employee signs up alone, the company loses the contacts and the card when they leave.
  • No QR fallback. Most modern phones read NFC, but a QR code on the card covers the rest.

Before you order

  • Profile works in Arabic, right to left, and in English
  • WhatsApp, call, email and Save contact buttons are in place
  • You can edit details later without reprinting
  • Material and finish chosen for each person or group
  • Company template locked and access rules agreed
  • You know where contact data is hosted and how to export it

Questions people ask

Do NFC business cards work on iPhones in the UAE?
Yes. Every iPhone from the XS onwards reads an NFC card without an app, as do most Android phones. Each Nexus card also has a QR code on the back for older phones.
Can my digital business card be in Arabic?
Yes. Choose Arabic and the whole profile is laid out right to left, including buttons such as Save contact. Or choose automatic, and each visitor sees Arabic or English to match their phone.
Can people message me on WhatsApp from my card?
Yes. Add a WhatsApp button to your profile and one tap opens a chat with you on the visitor's phone.
Where is my data stored?
Nexus hosts its application, database and file storage in the EU. Contact data is encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM, and you can export or delete your data on request.
Which card material is most popular for business in Dubai?
It depends on the person and the role. Metal suits senior and client-facing staff, wood gives a warm, natural feel, and full-colour PVC is the flexible choice for large teams with strong brand artwork.
Can we order cards for our whole company?
Yes. On the Teams plan you order cards into a company pool, assign them to people, and reassign them when someone leaves. Contacts collected stay with the company.
